"Annaṁ bahu kurvīta śraddhayā yasya dehinaḥ । tasya siddhiṁ paramāṁ gacchet"
(Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad, 1.3.24)

Meaning:"One should give food generously to those who are embodied (i.e., living beings). By doing so, one will attain the highest success."

Anna daan is the act of donating food to the needy. In Vedic culture, it is considered one of the most pious and virtuous acts. Anna Daan is considered to be Mahadaan. It is believed that offering food to others is equivalent to offering it to God Himself. The act of Anna Daan is also considered a form of seva, or selfless service, which helps one develop love and compassion towards all living beings.

"Annaṁ dātum mahat pāpaṁ nāśayati । sarvaṁ pāpaṁ nāśayati"
(Mahābhārata, Anuśāsana Parva, 66.22)

Meaning:"Giving food is a great act that destroys all sins. It destroys all sinful reactions."

Lord Krishna Himself emphasized the importance of anna daan in the Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 3, Verse 13) where He says "The devotees of the Lord are released from all kinds of sins because they eat food which is offered first for sacrifice. Others, who prepare food for personal sense enjoyment, verily eat only sin."

यज्ञशिष्टाशिनः सन्तो मुच्यन्ते सर्वकिल्बिषै । भुञ्जते ते त्वघं पापा ये पचन्त्यात्मकारणात् ॥

Anna Dāna as a Form of Worship.

"Annaṁ brahma, annaṁ param । annaṁ dātum paramaṁ tapaḥ"
(Chāndogya Upaniṣad, 7.23.1)

Meaning: "Food is Brahman (the Supreme), food is the highest. Giving food is the highest austerity."
